One place in Jefferson that’s been a safe haven for middle school age kids celebrates a quarter of a century this year.

The Webb House is open two times per week during the school year for middle school students to spend playing outdoor and indoor games, video games and just hanging out. Over the years, founder and organizer Jim North says the Webb House has been an asset to the community.

“The main thing that I want to stress is middle school kids and high school kids have had a big part in all of our 25 years. We’ve been very successful and (I) thank people of Jefferson for helping us out. That’s a long time for something like this to maintain.”

Today’s society has become an electronic-based world with smartphones, tablets, and laptop computers. North believes the Webb House still makes an impact for middle schoolers.

“I think it’s an important part of our community right now. The kids are technology savvy right now, more than I am. I have kids that help with all the technology that we need. And it’s true a lot of times you go into the tv room there’ll be 25 kids sitting there all on their phones. So I have to have them get out and do something, and provide some activities for them.”

The Webb House is open Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30pm for 5th-8th grade and Fridays from 7-9pm for 6th-8th grade. Call 515-386-4411 for more information or to be a chaperone.
