SunTrust Bank recently opened a new branch in Atlanta, which is equipped with a fully automated safe deposit system that allows users to safely store valuables and access them using debit/credit cards, passwords, and biometric hand scans.
The company called SafeStore Auto said it was the first similar product used by a US financial institution. The system was developed last year by SunTrust and Hamilton Safe, who built the system.
The two companies are collaborating on this project, looking for suitable locations to test the equipment, and brainstorming to deploy robot safes in other locations in the near future.
The technology has multiple layers of authentication, first swiping a debit/credit card and entering a password to enter the private room, and then another swipe and password process.
The system allows you to use the same password or a different code as the debit/credit card. The final step is a biometric hand scan to confirm the identity of the safe owner. Once the person's hand is scanned correctly, the safe will be automatically sent to the private room, and he or she can open the safe with the key.
"This is the first of its kind installed by a US financial institution. The technology is already in use in Europe, the Middle East and Asia," said Tom McDermott, senior vice president of retail channels at SunTrust Bank. "We are always looking for new technology and its viability for our customers and our branch network,"
McDermott said that the research supports the view that customers are seeking more self-service opportunities, adding that the new system is easier to access and provides greater security than ordinary safes.
He stated that the technology should "improve the overall branch experience and provide options to deploy safe deposit boxes in smaller branch formats and expand safe deposit boxes in existing locations that maximize the capacity of existing full-size bank safe deposit boxes."
Currently, there is no fixed plan for when SafeStore Auto will expand to other locations in SunTrust Bank.
