Starring the character inspired by Mike Mignola's Quarantine Sketchbook, the Hellboy creator is writing Radio Spaceman with art by Greg Hinkle.

The creator of Hellboy, Mike Mignola, will be debuting his Quarantine Sketchbook-inspired creation in a comic book to be drawn by Greg Hinkle called Radio Spaceman. The titular character was inspired by some of the doodles Mignola made during that pandemic, which were later published in his oversized hardcover Quarantine Sketchbook collection with the proceeds being donated to World Central Kitchen.

Having received much critical acclaim in comics, Mignola is best-known for Hellboy, a comic book that eventually spawned several movies with the titular character popping up in various crossovers within comics alongside the likes of characters like Batman as well as video games such as Injustice. Some of his other notable projects include production design work on Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire, co-writing DC's Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham, as well as co-writing Hellboy spin-offs such as B.P.R.D. and Lobster Johnson. He's joined on Radio Spaceman by Hinkle, who has illustrated several Image Comics series including Black Cloud and Airboy.

To be released by Dark Horse Comics, the Comics Beat press release shared that Radio Spaceman will be a two-parter. Other members of the creative team include longtime collaborators from the B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth series that featured Hellboy, colorist Dave Stewart (Abe Sapien) and letterer Clem Robins (Preacher). The news story also showed the main cover for the first issue of Radio Spaceman, which was drawn by Mignola with colors by Stewart.

The description for the story, titled "Mission to Numa 4," reveals the steampunk-inspired Radio Spaceman has been brought in to investigate a spaceship crashing and missing crew members. However, the mysterious planet they've vanished on may hold some secrets that could even be a match for this mechanical investigator. When discussing his inspiration behind the character of Radio Spaceman, Mignola compared him to his fan-favorite character by saying: “Radio Spaceman started in very much the way Hellboy did—A fast sketch done just for fun and a funny name that just popped into my head. That was during the early days of covid-19, when I was banging out sketches to entertain myself and posting them online. People seemed to like the guy, and I liked him—I did five or six sketches of him, but had no plans to do anything REAL with him. I didn’t have a story for him until, suddenly, one day I did. I wasn’t trying. It just happened. I don’t remember how exactly, but I’m suspecting it was one of those things that came to me in the shower. Most of the best ideas happen there.” This is not the only Mignola story fans have to look forward to in 2022, however. There will also be a new Hellboy mini-series titled The Sword of Hyperborea as well as a Sir Edward Grey: Acheron one-shot.

So, Mignola fans will have plenty to be excited about, but this Radio Spaceman mini-series may be of special interest to fans curious to see a new character's debut whose reception may very well determine if Mignola will return to the character again in the future. Though given his stellar track record with the likes of the numerous character he's created within the Hellboy universe and their longevity, it's safe to say readers will likely be seeing him again. The Radio Spaceman two-parter will begin with the release of the first issue to comic book stores and digital platforms on March 2, 2022.
