SAN ANTONIO — Console safes are in high demand, according to staff at Lock'er Down.

The local security system supplier, located on San Antonio's north side, told KENS 5 their sales are on the rise as thieves continue to target vehicles in San Antonio.

We decided to look into this unique security option after reporting on a recent truck burglary at La Cantera, where a thief made off with a laptop and handgun after breaking into the car, according to an SAPD report.

The truck's owner said the gun was hidden inside his console.

"People put them in their console thinking it's going to be secure. Some even have a lock on their console, but those locks can be so easily deterred," said Jennifer Long, office manager at Lock'er Down.

Long said the family-owned business began after the owner's truck was burglarized at The Rim Shopping Center in 2011. His gun was also stolen in the break-in.

"The owner just wanted there to be more security in vehicles to protect guns, cash or anything that is valuable in your vehicle, especially being in a big city with theft," said Long.

The business sells a variety of security products, but Long said their console safe is popular among customers who drive trucks. The safes, which are all vehicle-specific, vary in their security features and price.

In the photo slider below, Long showed the differences between their most basic option and a more secure, higher-priced offering. The former has a more standard cover, and comes with a four-digit combination lock.

The latter is better-suited to deter would-be criminals.

"Our most secure safe is going to show the extreme lid where you cannot see any of those gaps around the door of it," Long said. "It's also got our metal encased electronic lock and the code can be anywhere from five to 15 digits on this, and it's embedded into that lid for added security as well."

Long said the heavy-duty steel helps deter thieves from trying to break in and make a quick escape with valuables in the vehicle.

"If they see a safe, a lot of times they aren't going to mess with it," she said.
