There are, however, laser distance measurers, that are especially made for using outside. The way they do that is by allowing you to see the dot, even when you are not able to physically see it.

This can be done by adding an optical viewfinder, through which you can spot the laser dot. Like with a gun, the crosshair in the viewfinder will indicate where the dot is.

These can be a bit tricky to use, but will at least give you a chance to get accurate measurements outside.

Then there are also laser distance meters that have an in-built camera, where again, you will see a crosshair where the dot would be. This method is easier to use and will give you a more precise measurement. 

The bad news is, that the addition of a camera will also increase the price. So, when you decide to buy a model with a camera, you need to consider if the extra expense is worth it for the jobs you will be using the tool.
